Review App

Case Study: Tripleblaze

Tripleblaze is an outdoors website where members review campgrounds and hiking trails and post photos from their adventures. The site was already a success but the hassle of managing user accounts and the resulting user- generated content was becoming a burden. That's where we came in.
Today Tripleblaze is perhaps the most full-featured Review App site in the wild making use of features ranging from review and photo management to ad serving and search engine optimization. In just a short period the results from our makeover have been incredible: new user registrations are up 300% year over year and the average time members are spending on the site is up 25%!

What they wanted

  • Ability to collect and manage reviews and photos of places and products
  • Seamless integration with custom web design template
  • Consistent search engine optimization of URLs and meta tags
  • Customizable algorithm for finding best campgrounds and hiking trails
  • Tools to generate multiple online revenue streams

How we helped

Tripleblaze.com was already a big hit with users but the owners found themselves spending far too much time moderating and maintaining the site - not surprising given that Tripleblaze received more than 30,000 visits each month. With built-in functions for managing user accounts like automated password retrieval and self-service profile changes Review App seemed the natural choice.

We worked with Tripleblaze to transfer the enormous amount of user-generated content that already existed on the site: 3,000+ listings, 200 reviews, and 3,400 member accounts (not to mention wishlists and other items). Importing data to the Review App platform was a snap with the built-in spreadsheet tools and the new site was up quickly with zero service disruptions.

The Tripleblaze owners also decided to tackle a site redesign at the same time as the conversion and the timing couldn't have been better. We took the designer's Photoshop templates, created the HTML, and integrated Review App into the design for a seamless look and feel. Tripleblaze is perhaps our favorite Review App implementation from a visual standpoint and we think you'll agree the results are stunning.

Search engine optimization is important to all websites and Tripleblaze is no exception. The old Tripleblaze site used inconsistent URL structures and meta tags which meant users often had a hard time finding the content they were looking for. Review App gave Tripleblaze a consistent set of rules for creating URLs and meta tags and optimized the content for top search engine placement. Old pages were redirected to the new Review App pages to keep the online traffic flowing during the transition.

One of the most important features on the old Tripleblaze site was a listing of the best campgrounds in the country and it was important to duplicate this functionality on the new site. We built a new plug-in called 'Best Listing' to accomplish this and we like it so much we're including it in future releases of Review App. With Best Listing you can customize your algorithm to weight different rating factors (like average rating, number of reviews, number of list entries, etc.) to generate uniquely accurate results.

Finally, we made sure to address the need for multiple online revenue streams for Tripleblaze with AdZone and default sort priorities. AdZone is our ad server plug-in and Tripleblaze is using the plug-in to serve up to four ads per page from an array of advertisers. In addition, Tripleblaze is offering campground owners 'sponsored result' positioning by utilizing built-in default sort priorities. Campground owners pay an annual fee and Tripleblaze moves them to the top of the list in their state. Simple and profitable!

It's only been about a month since the new Tripleblaze site went live but the results so far are incredible: new user registrations are up 300% year over year and the average time visitors are spending on site is up 25% year over year. Thanks to solid design and the flexible Review App platform a fresh avalanche of user-generated content is sure to follow!
